Anyone bothered? I was considering it but now I'm not sure I can be bothered as I'm fairly happy with it as is. What really are the benefits? I'm not wanting to customise the look and don't want to run pirate software (though some of the apps in the Cydia store look quite good)
Apparently the jailbreaking on the latest Iphone software is really rubbish and unstable - and up until fairly recently was only available 'tethered' (which meant you had to reconnect it to a computer when you wanted to turn the phone on, otherwise it'd brick). My sister is converting from Iphone to android because of this - there's features such as SMS scheduling that she used jailbreak for, so with unreliable jailbreaking she has no choice (muahaha).
I've been considering of late, primarily because mine's out of warranty, and the ios5 update kinda borked it's performance. In reality, what I want is a new phone, but that's not exactly a possibility at the moment.
Untethered jailbreak has been out for a long time now and I've never had any stability issues with jailbreaks before. I personally cannot use an iphone without jailbreaking it, mainly because I need to use ultrasn0w to do a software unlock but SBSettings is another huge reason to jailbreak. Theres loads of cydia mods out there that make life a lot easier aswel. And Lisa, tethered requires you to connect your phone to a computer everytime you restarted your phone but it won't brick if you don't, you simply lose the jailbreak but the phone will still work perfectly fine.
I was considering it because I see you could use your PC to send texts via it (though now I've found Type2Phone on the Mac App Store so it's not needed for that anymore). SBSettings looks good but I've found the Launched app (69p on the app store) and the "hidden" settings URL's that Apple have so I can go straight to the settings I want. Finally, the only reason I'm considering it now is because there's an app that lets you see whats now playing in the music app in the notification centre. And to be fair, I only want that for the iPad (as the iPhone shows it on the lock screen!) so I think in fairness, I'll avoid it now.
Yeah, my only real desire for it is to regain a little of the customisation that Apple lock away. I don't really feel the need to pirate the apps (I did pay for the TomTom one), on the grounds that, if I use it, it's worth the money. Being able to access the apps that apple deem not worthy of the app store might be worth it, but there's nothing really in that range that I'm needing at the moment. To be honest, I'll probably leave mine as is until I get shot of it in favour of something a little newer.
Cant see why no one has yet put a now playing notification in the notification centre app. Wonder if Music+ will add it...
I never had that when I was on Android. What apps are those? I know Winamp had a widget which was nice.
I've had jailbroken devices since my first gen ipod touch. So the benefits (to me): 1. custom lock screen app that shows me news snippets, unread messages and the weather 2. fix so that the alarm still goes off if you muted your iDevice 3. improved functionality for emails, such as marking all mail read, performing advanced searches on mail 4. free apps, but lets not discuss here 5. easy to have custom ringtones (no need to convert via itunes), mines nyancat 6. THEMES! Theres some great but subtle themes out there, love mine. 7. I HAVE NYAN CAT ON MY SLIDER BARS!!! 8 activator app, which adds custom key and swipe shortcuts. Eg if I swipe left to right then back again my camera light comes on 9. Toggle buttons to enable wifi, 3g and roaming. No more going into settings... 10. 5 icons in the dock, for when 4 just aint enough 11. ability to save youtube videos 12. USB flash drive mode Didnt expect to come up with so many when I was numbering, sorry! Basically those are the 12 things that I really wanted from my phone, its different for everyone tho. It means if you want something you can just go into cydia and search for it, its probably out there... let me know if you go ahead, i know my stuff when jailbreaking. People who say it bricks their phones are also morons, trust me its nearly impossible
All iphones can now be untethered regardless of iOS version or device. Absinthe 0.4 does the 4S on 5.0 and 5.0.1 and redsn0w does the ip4. You cant technically do ip4 on 5.0 untethered (unless im missing something here) but you can just upgrade to 5.0.1 Again, the term brick is misused a lot. If a jailbreak goes wrong then the phone goes into DFU mode, showing "connect to itunes". It is very simple to restore the phone back to its original state from this screen. If it just wont turn on, take it back to apple because its NOT software related, and then they cant turn it on to know its jailbroke.... i should know, i've returned a jailbroke device! Images of my iphone 4 running iOS 4.3 via Jailbreak.me (cant be arsed to go to 5.0.1)
After speaking to Ben last night, I might give this a go. Was looking to follow the guide here. Does that seem right? EDIT:
I removed it. Nothing was of interest and didn't want to be running a jailbroken device just for the Launch shortcut.
