Martin Hamilton from IT services has agreed to give a presentation on Cloud Computing.

I will update this thread with an abstract when I get a reply from Martin.

EDIT: Room is J002 in EHB at 2pm.

Some of us CompSci freshers have probably already had this talk as part of E-Skills (Was added to the module this year) Although I will still probably go as I could hardly hear the man over the idiots at the back of the lecture hall messing about

Ohh, that sounds interesting (well at least from the title!)

Cloud computing is a big topic at the moment in the IT distrbution channel, because it has the potential to massively reduce the need for distributors both by reducing the need for boxed software solutions and reducing the need for servers and higher spec computers in Small to medium enterprise. Would be interesting to hear about it from an academic point of view.

I should totally give a talk on the IT channel and what influences the flow and pricing of the shiny things we all love so much and how the R&D cycle works at vendors, and how people can get a non-technical career in the channel in roles like sales and marketing and of course how it is all dominated by Tech Data and how awesome TD is and especially their Business Intelligence department!

Shameless Plug for my dad's book (which is related to cloud computing!)

Yeah, this version of the talk will be a lot more detailed than the one given to the freshers.
  6. Rob Game Committee

Ah good, I'll definitely be there then :D

Would it be possible to make the presentation/a recording available for those that are interested but unable to make it?
  10. Harold Saxon Honourable

I can do a sound recording, no idea what the quality would be like. Video wise, I don't have a webcam/camcorder that could do it.
  11. Ter0 Committee

If its held in the huge James France lecture rooms, they have cameras and mics built in, when Martin gave us a lecture there he had it recorded so he may know who/how :)
  12. Milkman Honourable

The talk is this week and we still have no abstract. Location is still TBC. Is this still going ahead? If I'm going to try and bunk off work for the afternoon I need to know these details!

Sorry about the noise in my Comp Sci guest lecture - that Google Doc scratchpad was clearly a mistake! When I use that approach at conferences people normally don't scribble all over it :)

For my LSUCS talk I thought it would be interesting to take a look at how we've mashed up RSS feeds, cloud APIs etc to make the my.Lboro site. I'm really interested in hearing people's thoughts about where we go next with this.

Although there's no lecture capture A/V kit in J001, this could be a good opportunity to try out a package called Big Blue Button. BBB is an open source equivalent to Blackboard Collaborate, a package that we currently pay big bucks for. I think we'll try that with my Mac's webcam and an external mic.

    See you guys on Wednesday...

    Looking forward to it!

Thanks! Remind me, is J002 on the same level as the Shop/Bar or is it same level as the Laundry Room? It's been a while since I was there ;)
